Hey all,
I'm starting a virtual private network (VPN) called TCUNet (The Cafe Underground Network), a secure (1024-bit SSL encrypted) private network that you can use for sharing files and other things. I'm looking for beta testers and when things are ready, about 100 slots will be open for anyone to join. If you are interested, please send me a private quick note and I will get back to you with a time that I would like the interested beta testers to get together on Skype (or possibly Zone by Phone_ to get things going.
Thanks,
Enigma
Is this really secure if you're opening it up to anyone? Still, it's a cool idea. I'm sure you're just looking for an interesting way of sharing public domain works and the like.
Chris:
Of course it's for the free exchange of public domain works, open-source software, and the like. As for the security, I control who has access, since I control the certificate authority (CA) that makes the SSL encryption work. OpenVPN )the open-source VPN software I'm using) is very secure, and I'm not afraid to revoke a cert if someone abuses the network. Oh, and OpenVPN works with Windows, Mac, and Linux.
This does sound interesting.
If you'll please, I'd like the opportunity to be a tester.
Hi, I would be interested in being a tester as well. I am not the most knolledgable in this, but I would be happy to learn.
Chris
Ok... I've got 2 interested people so far. I just need at least one more tester, but I prefer two if possible. Once I get one more tester, than I will begin the process of the testing. Keep watch of this space, and I will hope to be ready to begin on Monday or Tuesday.
Ok... the VPN is ready to rock. I've changed software to make it easier to use the network, so goto www.remobo.com and download the software, install it )if you get a message about the network driver, just tell it to install anyway, as it is safe (blame Microsoft)), and go through the setup wizard. Here's the login info you'll need:
User: TCUNetwork (note the caps)
Pass: tcumembers (all lowercase)
Location: pick a nickname (not a location and type it in)
Remobo assigns you a IP in the 7.x.x.x range, and a hostname of (nickname).tcunetwork.remobo.com so applications have an easier time finding each member of the network. Wasn't that easy... Now have some fun.
Any questions? Send me a private quick note or get in touch using Skype... you'll find that info in my profile.

doesn't seem to work...
I think OpenVPN is a better choice, as I strongly dislike some things with Remobo's interface. I will try to re-establish the network using OpenVPN sometime today. If you are still interested, than contact me using Skype.
